How to Detect a Plumbing Leak

When it comes to your plumbing system, one of the worst things that can go wrong is an undetected plumbing leak. They can start out small and continue unnoticed for a while before you even know they’re there, causing all kinds of damage. Finding and fixing water leaks in your home is something our plumbers are experts at.

How do you know when there is a water leak in your home? You don’t want to have to wait until you start noticing water damage on your walls or ceilings. You can come to us for expert water leak repair. Let’s go over some common signs that there’s an undetected water leak somewhere in your plumbing system.

A Sharp Increase in Water Bills

If you’re not paying attention to your home’s monthly water bill, now’s the time to start doing so. A sharp rise in your water bill means excessive usage. And if you can’t account for the increase through usage, chances are there’s a water leak somewhere. Be sure to give us a call if you ever receive a huge water bill.

Evidence of Mold and Mildew

Have you noticed a musty, moldy, mildewy scent in your home? Or perhaps you even have visible areas of mold in your home such as a darkening area in a wall or in the crevices of your home. These can be signs of a water leak because even leaks that are buried deep in your plumbing system can increase your home’s humidity levels. And a moist environment is the perfect breeding ground for mold to develop.

Excessive Cracks in Your Home’s Foundation

If you live in a home that’s older, it’s common to see superficial cracks in your foundation. However, if you have an excessive number of cracks for no obvious reason, this isn’t normal.

Sometimes a large amount of cracks can indicate that there’s a slab leak beneath your home’s foundation. These aren’t usually found until the damage is extensive.

Visible Water Damage

When a leak goes unnoticed for too long, water can accumulate in unlikely spots. For example, you may notice water stains or warm areas on a part of the floor, ceiling, or walls. You may also notice warped or buckling floorboards, loose floor or kitchen tiles, an area of the ceiling that’s sagging, and peeling paint or wallpaper.

The Sound of Running Water

Has anyone in your household said, “Do you hear the sound of water running,” leaving you trying to pinpoint the source of the noise? When no appliances, taps, or showerheads are running, you shouldn’t hear the sound of water. A faint, constant trickle that might be hard to detect can be a sign of a hidden leak such as a pipe leak behind the drywall or even a slab leak. The best thing you can do at this point is is thank the family member for pointing out and then give our team a call.
